Local Families

This collection of family histories and reminiscences give a snapshot of what life was like for families in the parish from different backgrounds from the latter part of the  nineteenth century.  The focus is on health, welfare, education, childhood and family life.  Whilst it has been impossible to obtain first-hand experiences of nineteenth century residents, their descendants have shared ‘passed down’ memories which, combined with documentary sources, has built up pictures of life some hundred or so years ago.  Family experiences that span several generations also illustrate a range of cultural changes.

Family archives and memories, census information, local history books and other documentary sources have all been used. Thanks are especially due to the relatives of the families concerned who have been generous with their time and contributions.

Map references, e.g. F57, refer to the area and grave number given on the maps of the churchyard produced by the Oxfordshire Family History Society in 2003 and reproduced from their CD-ROM with permission.
